Law in Transition 2016: Natural resources and sustainable development

This issue of Law in Transition focuses on natural resources and that sector’s contribution to sustainable development. It draws on a wide range of contributions from authors and organisations working both within the EBRD’s countries of operations and beyond.
Among the themes this issue covers are: the importance of clear policy-making, certain laws and robust institutions for sustainable development; the value of having a trusted intermediary (such as the EBRD or World Bank) to help balance the diverse and multiple stakeholders found in extractive projects; an exploration of sustainability challenges facing governments in the extractive industries sector today; the experiences of investor representatives as lessons learned for resource-rich countries in transition; a look at sector policy evolution in Mongolia; an examination of the role of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI); and a discussion of how the reduction of gas-flaring can contribute to better sector governance.
This latest issue of Law in Transition provides a rich array of lessons and ideas that can be applied to many resource-rich countries.
