EBRD projects News stories Contacts

The EBRD is committed to tackling the nature crisis and is guided by the goals and targets outlined in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

This commitment builds on our extensive experience in environmental safeguarding; for more than 30 years we have been applying our Environmental and Social Policy, which requires all projects to mitigate negative environmental impacts. This ensures that Bank investments are implemented in a way that protects and preserves nature.

Our Approach to Nature, which we launched at COP28 in 2023, outlines how the Bank will:

  • protect nature through its Environmental and Social Policy, which strengthens biodiversity protection and through environmental due diligence identifies ways to improve biodiversity
  • invest in nature by exploring new models for financing blue-green infrastructure, pollution prevention and the circular economy, and nature governance, while engaging in policy dialogue and donor partnerships to build capacity and address market failures
  • disclose nature-related information and support clients with ambitions to do the same, such as sharing biodiversity baseline data through the Global Biodiversity Information Facility.

The Bank pursues partnerships that contribute to a nature-positive future.

  • At COP27 we launched the Blue Mediterranean Partnership (BMP), which aims to scale up sustainable blue economy investments and policy reform in the southern and eastern Mediterranean region. The BMP draws on experience gathered under the
Northern Dimension Environmental Partnership in reversing marine environmental degradation in the Baltic Sea.
  • We are working with other multilateral development banks (MDBs) to develop nature-finance tracking methodologies. At COP28, MDBs agreed on a set of common principles for tracking nature-positive finance. We will use these principles to develop and implement internal frameworks and methodologies that track nature-positive outcomes.
